A Note from the Director:Welcome to the 20th anniversary of the Somerset Fly Fishing Show. I wonder how many of you have attended all the shows? I have, for sure. Every year I see familiar faces and have talked with so many of you, our loyal customer family. It seems only yesterday we had our first show. I was excited to see who would come, but wet behind the ears with experience in running a big show. Oh boy, did we learn fast. By noon the first day the fire marshal closed the door until some people would leave. Exhibitors were driving back to their shops to bring back more product and smiling all the way. I remember Leon Chandler, one of our sport’s legends, nicest person, and Cortland icon, tell me he’d done shows for 42 years in many countries and never ran out of catalogs. He was bone dry by mid-afternoon the first day. Even though it’s fun to reminisce, our show has always looked ahead and tried to get better. This year, as expected, we welcome back popular exhibits and celebrity speakers, but are pleased to have new business and new faces. One really big addition to this year’s show is the Friday night “International Fly Fishing Film Festival.” You don’t want to miss this. There’ll be food and drink available prior and during the films, so forget going home. Come after work, if you can’t take off Friday, or stay after your day at the Fly Fishing Show. We’re expecting a packed house and an exciting film festival. Lefty Kreh is coming back to Somerset and will also join our show in Marlborough, Raleigh and Lancaster. I’m excited to see him return and I know you are, too. If you have been a loyal customer, you know there is way more to see than time allows. We bill this as the largest all-fly fishing event in the world and it stills holds the title. Come for the first time or come for your 20th visit. Thanks for all your support and I hope our show has helped you learn and improve in fly fishing and tying. Chuck Furimsky, Director International Fly Fishing Film Festival: The nationwide Fly Fishing Show will host the International Fly Fishing Film Festival for the first time at Somerset in 2012. Award-winning films will be shown Fri. (1/27/12), beginning at 6:30 p.m. Film Festival tickets are $15 or $10 with admission to the Fly Fishing Show or $10 in advance (click here). According to Film Festival producers, “The International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4) will consist of 16 short and feature length films – about two hours – produced by professional and amateur filmmakers from all corners of the globe, showcasing the passion, lifestyle and culture of fly fishing. From steelhead in Northern BC to chasing multiple species in Costa Rica, the variety of films will pique the interest of all anglers. IF4 contains exclusive content not available in any other fly fishing film event.” Among the films slated to debut are Cuba on the Fly, The Costa Rica Challenge, and A Backyard in Nowhere.
