INTERNATIONAL FLY FISHING FILM FESTIVAL JOINS FLY FISHING SHOW AT FIVE LOCATIONS
The Fly Fishing Show will host the International Fly Fishing Film Festival at five show sites in 2012, announced Ben Furimsky of The Fly Fishing Show.
Film Festival screenings will be held immediately following the conclusion of the Fly Fishing Show, about 6:30 p.m. depending on the venue.  There will be separate admission charged for the films, but will be discounted for those attending the Fly Fishing Show, said Furimsky.  Complete information will be posted on www.flyfishingshow.com with a link for advance ticket sales at https://secure.dns77.com/www_flymaxfilms_com/if4store.asp.
Fly Fishing Show locations which will host International Fly Fishing Film Festival showings include Denver, Jan. 6; Marlborough, Mass., Jan. 20; Somerset, NJ, Jan. 27; Lancaster, Penn., Feb. 18; and Pasadena, Calif. March 3.
According to Furimsky, “The International Fly Fishing Film Festival (IF4) consists of 16 short and feature length films produced by professional and amateur filmmakers from all corners of the globe, showcasing the passion, lifestyle and culture of fly fishing. From steelhead in Northern BC to chasing multiple species in Costa Rica, the variety of films will pique the interest of all anglers. IF4 contains exclusive content not available in any other fly fishing film event. The film festival adds an after hour social event full of entertainment and energy that will mesh well with the high level of education, travel and retail sales that our shows already possess. This addition really completes the package for a full weekend event under one roof,” added Furimsky.

The Fly Fishing Show and the Clean Angling Coalition Partner to Spread the Message on Inspect, Clean and Dry
November 8, 2011 – Livingston, MT.:  A key partnership between the Fly Fishing Show, worlds largest fly fishing consumer show and the Clean Angling Coalition aims to bring the Inspect, Clean and Dry message to the winter show season.  Aquatic invasive species threaten our fisheries resources and cleaning gear is one of the best tools we have in preventing the spread of these harmful species.  The Fly Fishing Show will be educating anglers on cleaning to prevent the spread of invasive species at its seven venues across the US with the use of the Clean Angling brand and Inspect, Clean and Dry message.

“It is important that our industry stands together in educating anglers on the importance of cleaning their gear,” says Ben Furimsky, Co-Director of The Fly Fishing Show.  "We are thrilled to be part of the Clean Angling Coalition and sharing the message of Inspect, Clean and Dry. Our commitment is to protecting the fly industry from the impacts of invasive species.”

The angling community has a keen awareness about invasive species, unfortunately invaders continue to spread. We must teach all anglers to clean so they can help prevent the introduction of invasive species. When anglers repeatedly hear the importance of cleaning gear from trusted industry leaders, this creates a positive momentum for all anglers to take action.
“The Fly Fishing Show brings strength to the Coalition,” says Leah Elwell Clean Angling Coalition Program Manager. “This is a great opportunity to reach tens of thousands of anglers on cleaning at the largest fly fishing consumer show.”

The Clean Angling Coalition is a program of the Invasive Species Action Network. The mission of Invasive Species Action Network (ISAN) is to reduce the human-caused spread of invasive species by promoting voluntary behavior change. ISAN programs focus on creating and implementing practical solutions for people, and providing educational resources.  ISAN is a 501c3 non-profit conservation organization based in Livingston, MT. Fly Fishing Show helps With Casting for Recovery
Fly Fishing Show Owner and Director, Chuck Furimsky spent some time volunteering for Casting for Recovery.  Chuck Furimsky was lucky enough to be one of the river guides for a Casting for Recovery outing sponsored by the South Jersey Coastal Fly Anglers. "We caught fish and had a terrific day," smiled Furimsky.

Fly Fishing Show Announces new location in Pennsylvania for 2012

Our first Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Show was recently dealt a bad hand by the state when they gave one of their last casino licenses to the Valley Forge Convention Center. The soft sound of fly rods moving through the air will soon be replaced with the pull of noisy slot machines. Our show is now part of history in Valley Forge, but there is good news for the future. Not one to gamble, I researched for a second location and I’m pleased to report we have a winning hand.
The Pennsylvania Fly Fishing Show has a new home in Lancaster, the oldest inland city in America. In the heart of the Historic District is one of the finest convention centers I’ve seen. Just two years old, connected to a majestic Marriott property, and ample parking, I was sure it would be too expensive. I was wrong. The hotel has all the bells and whistles of a 5 Star complex, but for our show their room rates will be a modest $89, including breakfast, plus free parking.  And they have also adjusted the $12 parking fee to $5 for our show attendees. No city has free parking, nor rates as acceptable as $5.
There’s more. The exhibit hall has 30-foot ceilings, plenty of room for the worst open loop casters, and many gorgeous soundproof and carpeted seminar rooms. It’s easy to unload and pack because you can drive to your booth. They have free flat bed carts and it’s a “non-union” facility. Electricity is very reasonable and the exhibit hall, Marriott, and parking are all under one roof. This is the complete package.
If you look at the map you’ll see Lancaster is only:
    45 minutes from Harrisburg
25 minutes form Harrisburg International Airport
    90 minutes from Baltimore
    30 minutes from York
    40 minutes from Reading
60 minutes from Philadelphia (Valley Forge)
60 minutes from Gettysburg & Carlisle

It’s also a known destination for visiting the largest factory outlet shopping mall in the mid-Atlantic state, famous for surrounding Amish farms and markets, and, for Hardy aficionados, the US office and warehouse is just outside downtown Lancaster. Several of the largest TU Chapters in the state are close-by with large memberships that are welcoming the new show location.
The available weekend date will be February 18 and 19 with set up day on Friday. Mark your calendar and call us to reserve your booth now for 2012.

A few responses from our 2011 shows:
I just wanted to thank you for the generosity that you showed to CASTING FOR RECOVERY during the recent Somerset Show.  You gave us passes each day to allow the breast cancer survivors that were helping with outreach to attend the event.  I can't tell you what a great time the women had.  As I showed them around the exhibit hall their eyes became big as saucers.  They just could not believe that all the booths were related to the sport of fly fishing.  It was a wonderful experience for them and I thank you for making it possible.

The show was fantastic!  Our VFTU booth was really well received and we even made some money for the chapter.  I was impressed with the quaility of the exhibitors and the emphasis on PA fly fishing.
And thanks again for providing a booth to us – we really appreciate it.  I do hope you do this show again next year.

-Valley Forge Trout Unlimited

Just want to say thanks for putting on a great show at Valley Forge,
Pa this year. This was the second time that I was a vendor at a show
of this size and first time involved with the Fly Fishing Show.
Everyone was helpfull during the set up and giving directions to the
seminar rooms. I have done lots of smaller shows in the past but this
show was awesome. It definitely has improved my business as a guide
and fly tier. So kudos go out to you and your staff. I will definitely
be looking forward to next year. .

In behalf of our chapter, TU 468 - SE Mont. PA, I want to thank everyone involved for a great show. This was the first time for me to set up one of these for the chapter and it went off without a hitch. If you recall a bunch of nuts running around selling tickets and having a ball at the same time, that was us.
I've been asked to formally thank you and Chuck for choosing Valley Forge for the show, for setting up the locations of the non-profits organizations, and for your professionalism (which I'm sure was tested more than once by the public in general). We are hoping that the show will be green lighted for next year.
     Thanks again.

Thanks for the report on the 2011 Fly Fishing shows and congratulations to you for such a successful (and ambitious) show season. I appreciated the opportunity to  participate in the Somerset and Philadelphia shows at the author's booth, FFF casting instruction and as a member of the angling press.

I have never seen such a rich feast of programs and demonstrations for the fly fisher as I witnessed at the last Somerset show. The Philadelphia/Valley Forge show showcased the wonderful adventure and style of Pennsylvania's streams and rivers and I think it stirred up new interest in nearby coastal options.

just wanted to drop a line on how much we enjoyed the show and got some great experiences with the tiers and I'm hoping that you will be back next year and for many more, thanks for bringing the show to us-Steve

Fly Tying Legend and long time Fly Fishing Show Celebrity Dick Talleur passed on.

Richard W. Talleur passed on Friday February 18, 2011, after a brief illness.  Originally from Clinton Corners, NY, Dick enjoyed a long career with AT&T.  After retiring from AT&T, Dick took his favorite hobby and first love, and made it his life.  Dick was an accomplished fly tier and fisherman, and a well-known and respected author of several books on fishing and fly-tying.   Dick loved his sport and, with his many friends, supported the continuation of fly fishing and the practice of catch and release.

Dick is predeceased by his parents Richard B. Talleur and Dorothy Carner Talleur Wollenhaupt; and by his son William D. Talleur.  He is survived by his wife Vera A. Talleur, his step-son Yuri Y. Kovalenko, his sister Carolyn A. Lawatsch of Pompano Beach, FL, his brother David C. Talleur and wife Denise of Midway, GA, and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Dick would have appreciated any donations, in lieu of flowers, be made to HEIFER INTERNATIONAL, or to a Charity of your choice in his name.

Please also sign the McMillian-Small Funeral Home guestbook at www.msfh.net.

Dick was a staple face at the Fly Fishing Show and the International Fly Tyers Symposium.  He has been with us since the shows started and he will be among the faces that will always be missed in the years to come.  We hope he has a big Atlantic Salmon on the end of his line and the Brookies are rising!

Fly Fishing Show to change locations for the North Carolina show in 2011.
In North Carolina, the show has relocated from Charlotte to the Raleigh Fairgrounds.

"The new location has a huge number of fly-fishers, free parking, a modern facility and reasonable lodging, which all makes this more exciting," said Chuck Furimsky, show owner. The college atmosphere of the Durham/Raleigh area and the highly rated Raleigh airport gives this destination great opportunity for the show to attract a huge crowd.

George "Chappie" Chapman retires at age of 91

One of our long time fly tiers has decided to retire at the age of 91 years young!  He will be missed at our shows by both the staff and customers.  Here is the letter we received from his daughter announcing his retirement:
Thank you for your wonderful and familiar letter giving Chappie his instructions for the upcoming show.  He has asked me to respond on his behalf to let you know that he has retired from tying at shows but has wonderful many fond memories of tying at Furminsky shows over the years.  He associates those times with good friends, good times, and he especially loved working with the children.  He is still amazed that he was sitting next to his heroes.

He is well but he has finally discovered that there is a limit to his wild energy.  He will celebrate his 91st birthday on November 2nd and Mary will celebrate her 87th on November 4th.  She sends her regards and thanks for including them in all the shows.  She made many friends and enjoyed helping out the other fly-fishing vendors when they became overwhelmed with business.

The shows were a wonderful fly-fishing family experience for them and to this day, when I overhear snippets of conversation, I often hear them talking about being a the shows, who they were with, who they saw, who met them for dinner.  The show was the center where these fishermen could come together and establish relationships that sustained through their lives.

Again, thank you and please communicate his appreciation to your father.

We are grateful for the opportunities you gave him over the years to demonstrate his tying skills, to unleash his inner "carnival barker,"  to engage others in the fly-fishing life.  For him, the days before the shows were like a child's last days before Christmas.
Sincerely,
Catherine Chapman Wilson

A few responses from our 2010 shows:
Just a short note to say thanks for letting me tie at the Pleasanton Show.  I had a great time and it is always nice to see a lot of my friends.  In talking with exhibitors everyone was very happy and it sounded like they were doing well.  Congratulations!!!!!

Thanks for the information and the passes that you are giving us. I am so grateful that you guys allow nonprofit organizations like Cast Hope to come to your shows. Through your willigness and generosity you are helping this organization make an impact on the youth of Northern California through fly fishing. We are considering this a coming out party for our organization. A time where we can spread the word about our cause. Thank you again. I look forward to the Pleasanton Show.

Hello Flyfishing Show Team,
My name is Tom LoProto, and I am the Treasurer of the Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited.  I had the pleasure and good fortune to attend  Ben Turpin's Pocono Presentation at the Somerset Show.  It truly was one of the best flyfishing presentations I have ever attended.  He was prepared, had all the facts, and certainly knew his stuff.  Many times you attend these sessions and the person presenting sways the presentation in a direction different from what the audience expected...maybe to promote their flyshop or outfitting service.  But not in Ben's case.  He delivered exactly what was promised.  I was amazed at how the folks in the room did not want to leave their seats even after the presentation was over (almost like when see a great movie in the theater....you still sit there even after all of the credits have rolled off the screen).
Thanks for having people like Ben Turpin at your show.   Speakers like Ben make for a great venue.  I look forward to next year's show.

Thanks
Tom LoProto

Fly Tying, Fly Fishing, and Life Living Loose a Legend: John Clarence "Jack" Gartside 1942 - 2009

Sad news. December 6th, after a hospitalization of several weeks,  Jack finally lost his protracted battle with lung cancer.  He was in bed resting comfortably, attended by friends, with the first snow of the season falling silently outside.

Jack was one of the most talented and entertaining members of our Fly Fishing Show Family.  He has been a regular at our shows since the beginning.  He loved to teach, tell stories, and dance.  His innovation in fly tying will continue to influence fly tiers for many years to come.  There will never be a Fly Fishing Show or International Fly Tyers Symposium that Jack will not be thought of or missed.

Thank you Jack.

Fly Fishing Show Exhibitor, Skip Storch, Inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame

Skip Storch, Ultra-Marathon Swimmer of South Nyack, New York is being Inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame on Friday, September 11th at the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Laderdale, Florida.

He was nominated for ESPN’s ESPYS Award for "Best Outdoor Athlete" for his 85.5 mile ultra marathon swim of 32 hour 52 minute triple circumnavigation swim around Manhattan Island in 2007. He was 50 years old and set both the double and triple World Records during the same swim. He also saved a kyacker pinned under a boat during the first lap. He became the first person to swim the entire 15 mile length of the East River in 1990. During that swim he swam the complete length of Hell’s Gate in a lighting and hail storm. Although the swim started out in clean waters, 3.5 million gallons of raw sewage was release due to a fire at Ward Island sewage treatment plant. Skip swam through it.

Skip started swimming in the 1970s when directed to do so by his doctors. He lost his spleen and was sickly. He built up his health by swimming distance. Not fast, but persistently he increased his durations from 12 to 24 hours and eventually 36 hours nonstop for charities and environmental awareness. His 10 to 12 mile work outs were the foundation of his swims. During his four decades of ultra marathons he raised enough monies to build two indoor therapeutic pools, wheelchairs, and equipment for the multiply disabled.

In 1988 he swam for the first time the 150 mile length of the Hudson River from Albany to Manhattan Island in 53 hours staged. The following two years in two exhibitions swims Skip swam 85 miles of the New Jersey Shore and 100 miles of the Long Island Sound as both staged/assisted swim to promote clean waters. In 1993 he attempted to swim the 92 mile Florida straights from Cuba to Florida, but was forced to retire after 25 hours.

In 1999 a Hurricane named Floyd barreled up the US coast and caused significant damage to his home making him homeless and in financial dispare. Trying to rescue his business he fractured two vertebra paralyzing his right arm. After a successful life saving operation he had limited use of his arm. The doctors told him he would never have the range or enough power to swim another stroke. Skip rededicated himself to the water and after two years of self-rehab he swam his first stroke.

On September 11th 2001 the twin towers were destroyed. This terrorist act haunted him. Living less than thirty miles from ground zero and having a compromised immune system, he stayed away from the area for one month. Upon returning he got sick from the air quality. He like so many others from the metropolitan area got a lymphatic disease call sarcoidosis. To save his life he started taking medicine. He was uncertain about his life expectancy and started training again with a vengeance for a marathon swimming comeback. At the age of 48 he set the Albany to New York Hudson River Swim in 41 Hours 30 Minutes. The next year two tumors were removed from his arm and it set him back again. At the age of 50 he pulled off the triple around Manhattan Island dedicating all proceeds to the Victims of 9/11.

Expo-Guide Is on The Prowl For Unsuspecting Show Exhibitors

Fly Fishing Show organizers have learned of a new scam running out of Mexico that is targeting show exhibitors by using the Fly Fishig Show name and trademark. The company Commercial Online Manuals is sending solicitations to show exhibitors to advertise in its Expo-Guide. The scam is almost identical to the FAIR Guide operated by Construct Data Publishers Verlag AG and is intent on misleading show exhibitors into believing that the solicitation is  associated with the Fly Fishing Show - it is NOT! Furthermore, exhibitors can easily be tricked into placing a directory listing in the Expo-Guide believing it in all cases will be "FREE." However, by signing the form exhibitors will actually be entering into a three-year, irrevocable agreement requiring them to pay a significant amount of money with no foreseeable benefits.

THE FLY FISHING SHOW DOES NOT SUPPORT THE EXPO-GUIDE! Commercial Online Manuals and its directory Expo-Guide are not associated with, or endorsed by, Fly Fishing Show organizers. Furthermore, the use of the Fly Fishin Show name and trademark by Commercial Online Manuals in its solicitations is unauthorized. The Fly Fishing Show has filed  complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, and will be filling out a form with Consumer protection.  If you have questions regarding this scam please go to http://www.stopecg.org/expo-guide.htm#info.

Fly Tyers Enjoy some fishing

We thought you might enjoy this photo of several of our demonstration fly tyers that got together on the annual fishing trip to Seven Springs Mt. Restort in PA.  Seven Springs is the home to the very first Fly Fishing Show over 20 years ago!  Many of these fly tiers have been with the show ever since.  Thanks for your continued support and we hope to continue growing our friendships for years to come.

2009 Show Responses

Due to a number of request to hear how shows went and as many responses sent in, we are posting some feedback from the 2009 shows.

Chuck Furimsky's Fly Fishing Shows are the cornerstone of Hardy's approach to the market.  We work with our dealers and their customers, always looking forward to Springtime surrounded by friends and colleagues every weekend until ice out, one great show after another.

Just a note to tell you how much I enjoyed working some of your Fly Fishing Shows last season.  It almost seems that the time we spend at a general show is not near as productive.  Your Fly Fishing Shows are the best and I hope you have continued success in the years to come.

Denver 2009:

Thanks again for a great show in Denver.
We had lots of guys coming through our booth keeping us busy for most of the weekend. I also had great audiences at my talks in the Destination Theatre. This was our third time attending the Denver show and it was our best one yet.
As always I like to take advantage of being at the show for three days and I got a chance to chat with Bill Keough, Enrico Puglisi, Tom Baltz and John Gierach. Having all those names under one roof, you can’t help but learn more about fly fishing and fly tying. This is the only show where attendees have that opportunity.
Looking forward to Bellevue. All the best,

We've been attending the Fly Fishing Show in Denver since its conception and have always been satisfied with the attendence. This year was no difference. Our target market was there as usual and we had our best sales result to date.

The Denver Fly Fishing Show is one of the top venues that I have tied in.  The show allows me to share with other my joy of fly tying.  The quality of the fly tiers are top notch, very knowledgable, enjoy sharing what they have learned and are very friendly.  I look forward to tying at the Denver Fly Fishing Show, it' one of the highlights of my year.
Rick Takahashi, Professional Fly Tier

Despite a challenging economy and a lack of support from within the fly fishing industry, this show has proved it is here to stay.  Crowds were great every day of the show and we reached our goals in sales.  We even sold out of many items way too early.  This is the place to be for anyone interested in Fly Fishing from the Rocky Mountain area.  If there was only more time to enjoy all the features!

Marlboro 2009:

The show was great for us as a local guide service.  More and more
clients come out with us each year and this show is both for gaining new clientele
and checking in with existing clients.  We book more trips each time we
attend.  With the struggling economy people are looking for alternatives to
expensive trips and I think this gives local guides huge opportunties at
any of your shows.

Somerset 2009:

The show once again was great! Attendance seemed to be as usual and the folks walking around seemed happy to take their minds off of the real world stuff. Not as many “full bags” as I would have liked to see but all in all I would say it was a 10+. Chuck and all his staff did a wonderful job. This is without question the best fly show in the country.

Charlotte 2009:

I have been going to the Fly Fishing Show in Charlotte for a number of years. I really appreciate that opportunity. It is a great resource and I look forward to the event each year.  I especially enjoyed the shows at the Charlotte Convention Center.  Please keep up the good work. While this year's show probably suffered from the economic circumstances we currently face, it was nevertheless, very enjoyable.
Thanks again.

Our impression of the 2009 Flyfishing and Wingshooting show could not have been better! It will be very hard to think of any “bad or ugly” to go with all the “good”!  We will certainly encourage new vendors to the show that may be a good mix for you and pass on your information to them as well.
Thank you for a great show and a job well done!

Portland 2009:

We just got back from the Portland Oregon Fly Fishing show. It was a surprisingly good turnout despite this economic situation we are in. There was a definite lack of manufactures at the show. Rumor is they(AFFTA) are boycotting Chuck's shows because they didn't get a kick back from the fruits of his labor and saw an opportunity to cripple him when his partner retired. I thought the AFFTA job was to promote the sport of fly fishing ?
It would seem that we all need to work together to keep the fly fishing industry alive and healthy, especially with our current economy. If we do not continue to educate people to our wonderful sport where will we be ?

Pasadena 2009:

Well, last weekend the annual Fly Fishing Show rolled into town.  I was pretty excited.  Even though I hate crowds, I had been looking forward to it for weeks.  Since I had never been, I really wasn't sure what to expect.  To be honest, I was worried that current economic times was going to keep people away.  As usual, I was worried over nothing.   Just like from Field of Dreams,  "If you build it, they will come."   Chances are if you fly fish and live in the  Los Angeles area you found yourself in Pasadena at some point over the weekend.  I talked to folks that had driven over two hours to make it there.   I have to say, Chuck Furimsky, who owns the show, puts on a great event.

Thank you for a exciting show.

I have attended every show since you came to Northern California.  Overall, I thought the show was terrific and you made some improvements over prior years that were notable.  The number of the casting ponds, both inside and out, seemed different and an improvement.  I found that I was able to cast at any location with ease and was not "crowded".  This made trying out different products comfortable and I was able to perform a proper test drive.  Good Work.  I think the number and types of exhibitors was a good mix.  There were outfitters, fly shops, material vendors and others.  This offered a  nice variety.  Overall, I thought the show aesthetics were much improved and allowed the customer to have a more pleasurable experience.  Everyone should be pleased with the improvements made.

Press Release 5/29/2008:

The Fly Fishing Show & FFF team up to  introduce a new generation of fly fishers to the Sport

The Fly Fishing Show is proud to announce the formal partnership of the Federation of Fly Fishers (FFF) and the show to introduce more people to our sport.  “We hope to continue, as we have since the first days of the show, to work with F.F.F., an organization that truly cares about the future of fly fishing,” said Chuck Furimsky, the show’s director.
“With show locations in eight strategic geographic areas the potential for introducing people to fly fishing is a sure winner.  In the last twenty years my shows have introduced over 100,000 curious people to our sport, that are now dedicated participants, but we’re looking for more” continued Chuck.
“ F.F.F. has always been a part of every show because of dedicated regional members volunteering their love and knowledge of our sport to newcomers.  Now with this partnership, the global support of F.F.F. that has active members in over 23 countries, is a positive step to promoting fly fishing to everyone,” affirmed Chuck.
Plans are being finalized to present an “Introduction to Fly Fishing” area staffed by men, women and youth members of F.F.F. that will provide free instruction to any of the tens of thousands who attend the shows.  All questions and help requests in every aspect of fly fishing will be professionally responded to by qualified and certified F.F.F. instructors and show personnel.”
“The best way to introduce newcomers to our sport is to immerse them into an atmosphere of total fly fishing with the best teachers in our sport,” reiterated Chuck.  I believe the future of our sport will be served even better with this cooperative effort.”
“The federation is extremely happy to be associated with The Fly fishing Show and it’s 8 shows across the country in 2009.” Stated R.P.  “Van” VanGeitenbeek  “Through these venues the FFF and it’s members will be able to reach new tyers and fly caster and cultivate and advance the art, science and sport of fly fishing”  Van added “ Across the country the Fly Fishing Shows partnership will allow FFF to facilitate and improve the knowledge of fly fishing, and meet our goals with crowds dedicated to learning the standards, honor and courtesy of anglers that FFF espouses.”
